3 Stupidly Simple Rituals That Restored My Sanity
When you can go on a vacation or blow up your life!
I’m not sure I can fully do justice of explaining how effective these rituals are, but I credit them with restoring my sanity, sense of authority, and energy during mentally challenging times.
These simple acts of self-care prove that you don’t need a 10-step morning routine to get unstuck and feel grounded and in control.
At their core, these practices are about simplicity, practicality, gentleness, and lightheartedness.
Healing and self-care don’t have to be serious, complicated, or expensive. In fact, some of the most effective tools are playful, simple, and free.
Here are a few of my favorites, listed in no particular order of importance.
1. Walk It Out
This one is easy to overlook, but profoundly effective for shifting stagnant energy. Any type of movement is good, but walking in particular has a spiritual effect. And it’s great for the brain? Say less!
The bilateral rhythm of left-right movement helps integrate both hemispheres of the brain, lowers stress hormones, boosts feel-good neurotransmitters, and regulates the nervous system. That’s why a simple walk often leaves us feeling clearer, calmer, and even more creative.
But honestly, I don’t need science to tell me what I already know: walking just. feels. good. It gives me energy, provides me with a new perspective, and quiets my neurosis.
Whatever problems I bring on a walk seem to lighten, and whatever inspiration I bring tends to expand.
Go figure—it’s simple, free, and accessible (if walking is available to you).
2. Laugh It Out
Ok, this one may sound ridiculous (maybe even more so coming from a therapist), but I swear, The Mindy Project and Brooklyn Nine-Nine once got me through a really tough season.
When I wasn’t working or handling essential life tasks, I gave myself permission to do the bare minimum—mainly watching shows that made me laugh. I intentionally removed the pressure to be productive and just allowed myself to rest.
It is always far more satisfying than mindlessly scrolling on your phone, and for me, one of the best mental escapes is into a world of humor and playfulness.
I consider this a deliberate act of self-care, not avoidance, because laughter truly is medicine.
Write It Out
I’ve talked about this one before, but writing and journaling have carried me through many challenging moments. Although I journal daily, I find it especially helpful when I’m feeling unclear, confused, or struggling with a decision.
In those moments, I write in a conversational way—giving space to every part of me to speak openly and without filter. I let myself express what I feel, what I like, what I don’t, and what I wish were different. This helps me step back from my thoughts, notice patterns, and gain insight I might have missed before.
You don’t need to be a “good writer.” You only need to be honest, real, and willing to let the truth speak through you.
An easy way to start journaling is by doing guided journals. All of the journals I created are beginner friendly and geared towards helping you get to know yourself, so if you feel called to get started, check out my Guided Journals section.
